Similarities

I think there are some similarities between Beowulf and The Iliad. They had similar goals. Both Beowulf and Achilles killed for good reasons.  Beowulf killed Grendel to defend Herot and to stop him from harming more people. Achilles killed Hector to avenge the death of his best friend, Patrolus. Beowulf and Achilles ruthlessly killed their enemies who were weaker. They then proudly show that they had won the battles.

  1. I believe that another similarity between these two great epics is the goal to gain immortality. Beowulf strived to gain immortality for himself by fighting wars with monsters, so that his name would go down in history and the bards of that era would share Beowulf's bravery through stories. Achilles wanted to gain immortality for Patrolus, so he killed Hector and then went to find Patrolus' body so he could bury it, because during that time, it was believed that immortality was achieved through burial of one's body.
